Features of the Blob Service and Image Transformation
Get to know the features and limitations of the blob service and image transformation.
CoreMedia Content Cloud - Service and self-service customers can benefit from a blob storage based on a shared service. It allows for blobs larger than 2GB and integrates well with the Image Transformation based on a shared service that supports WebP and AVIF in addition to JPEG, GIF and PNG out of the box. Due to the nature of shared services, the image transformation has different features and limitations compared to the built-in image transformation library used in earlier versions and in self-managed installations of the CoreMedia Content Cloud. These differences are described in the following sections.
Sizes, Formats and Operations of the Image Transformation
The image transformation feature of CoreMedia Content Cloud - Service supports the following images in terms of file sizes (MB = Megabytes, MP = Megapixels), file formats and transformation operations:
Input Dimensions |
|
---|---|
Max. image file size (except PNG) |
20 MB |
Max. image file size (PNG) |
50 MB |
Max. image megapixels |
25 MP |
Max. multi-frame file size |
40 MB |
Max. multi-frame megapixels |
200 MP |
Output Dimensions |
|
General - Applies if no other limit is defined for the format |
25 MP (e.g., 5000 x 5000 pixels) |
Animated GIF |
120 MP (e.g., 3446 x 3446 with 10 frames or 2000 x 2000 with 30 frames) |
Animated WebP |
200 MP (e.g., 4472 x 4472 with 10 frames or 2581 x 2581 with 30 frames) |
Operations |
|
All operations known from the built-in transformation are supported except the rotation of animated formats. |

Upload |
JPEG, PNG, GIF |
Transform |
WebP, AVIF, JPEG, PNG, GIF |
CoreMedia Studio won’t prevent the editor from uploading bigger pictures and from creating transformations that do not comply to the constraints above. In these cases, the preview will show a broken image. CoreMedia plans to provide the editor with more detailed feedback in the future. |
Transparency Handling
When transformations introduce new (semi-)transparent background areas (like a non-rectangular rotation), there are losses for JPEG and GIF images. For JPEG images (semi-)transparent areas are flattened against an assumed white background. For GIF images semi-transparent background colors are "rounded" to full transparency or opacity.
It is discouraged to use transformations with transparency combined with output formats that do not
support transparency. If you use transparent background colors in transformations, you should use
WEBP, PNG or AVIF as output format by a convert
transformation.
(The built-in image transformation library converts such images automatically to PNG.)
Continuous Updates
During the lifetime the shared services used for the blob service and image transformation will be continuously improved, provided with bugfixes and security updates. As a customer, CoreMedia takes care of these changes for you.
Limited Customizability
The image transformation features are the same for all service customers. They cannot be changed for individual customers in the shared services. Customizations of image delivery in the CAE and the Headless Server are consequently only possible to a certain degree.
